Dare To Be Great

If you could choose one memory, one story from your life, when you took a risk, challenged the status quo and found yourself in a dare to be great situation, what would it be?

Our memories make us, even when we’re old and our minds are fogged by time and illness. The right memory can bring comfort, restore meaning and reconnect us to the world and those around us.

During the summer of 2017, Fable Arts, together with Ludus Dance and staff at Clifton Hospital in Lytham, invited twelve young people from across Fylde age 16 – 25 to work* with us to create their own dare to be great situation at Lytham Festival 2017, whilst helping local people living with dementia remember theirs.

Together, we searched for the stories that steered the lives of local people, now living with dementia, into different directions, catapulted them into the orbit of places and people they might never have met, and changed their lives for the better. In return, we gave them their own dare to be great experience. A chance to perform at Lytham Festival and a package of specialist training which:

  • taught them how to support and communicate with patients living with dementia
  • showed them how to interview, record and transcribe oral history stories to create quality sound pieces
  • developed their devising, choreographic, technical and performance skills
  • demonstrated how to develop a piece of physical theatre specifically designed for outdoor and other public spaces

Dare To Be Great was a joy to deliver and resulted in 9 performances including performances to the public in two outdoor settings across Lytham, in-hospital to patient, staff and carers and on stage at Lytham Festival to over 6,000 people.

During delivery of “Dare To Be Great”, staff at Clifton Hospital reported improvement patient mental wellbeing in those who participated, greater interactivity between patients attention and concentration between “Dare To Be Great” sessions, as well as an uplift in mood and an increased sense of optimism amongst patients who looked forward to taking part.

Take a look at what Lauren, one of our young people participating in the project, wrote about the experience here.
